Chris of Black Cat Design recently completed a two‑room addition above our garage (a bedroom and dressing room), and we truly could not have asked for a better experience. Going into a project of this scale, we were prepared for disruption, delays, and budget surprises—because that’s what everyone warns you about. Instead, none of those fears came true.

Aside from a couple of minor, well‑communicated delays, the entire process felt smooth and remarkably low‑stress. The final cost came in at the lower end of the estimate, even with a few add‑ons we chose along the way. Chris took the time to understand our vision, presented thoughtful options at different price points, and never made assumptions or pressured us in any direction. The transparency throughout the project was exceptional.

Chris is a true professional, and it’s clear he surrounds himself with subcontractors who share the same standards. Everyone who worked on our home was respectful, skilled, and pleasant to have around. The finished addition exceeded our expectations—friends and family consistently tell us they never would have guessed it wasn’t part of the original house.

Honestly, the only disappointing part of the project ending is that we don’t get to see Chris regularly anymore. He went above and beyond, whether it was fixing a sticking door, meeting the garage door repair technician, or keeping our cat entertained. We recently finished a complete remodel of our kitchen under the guidance of Chris Miller / Black Cat Design Build LLC. We're giving Chris a 5 star rating due to the exceptional overall experience. Our project was complete in all aspects, new cabinets, hardwood floors, quartzite countertops and backsplash, plumbing, lighting, moving of walls, replacement and relocation of major appliances.

Most notable was Chris's overall competence throughout the project. From our original interview of him, working through the design details, then into the construction phase, he made us feel at ease, not an easy task considering the challenges and disruption this sort of project can present. This was a 12 week process, for most of which we remained living in the home.

Chris's group of contractors were also great. Quality workmanship and professionalism were displayed daily. They took great care in mitigating the mess and disruption of their respective jobs and the work performed was excellent.

Another very important reason for our strong rating was Chris's communicative skills, no matter the situation or question that arose, we received thorough responses in a timely manner.

Concerning the monetary aspects of the job, Chris's approach is transparent. His proposal process was clear, and he maintained adherence to his estimate.

With respect to timeline, Chris and his subcontractors also performed well here, adhering to the originally quoted timeline.

Ultimately, we're incredibly happy with the outcome of our project. What few challenges arose were dealt with quickly and to our satisfaction. We would highly recommend Black Cat Design Build LLC to anyone seeking a kitchen remodel or other home construction project.

We interviewed no less than eight contractors, and Chris Miller, Black Cat Design Build, LLC stood out in talent, creative vision, and competency. This was a challenging project and we wanted to make sure that we had the right contractor and designer for the job. The whole house remodel was an extremely detailed undertaking. We also recognized that we are very particular about the workmanship, so we needed to select a design-build firm that we believed would not compromise on the quality of the work delivered. Black Cat was our top choice. Chris stepped into the chaos we had inadvertently created, and from bedlam created a beautiful, expansive, extremely functional, and tranquil living space that we are enjoying immensely. We are deeply grateful for all of his work, and the wonderful team of craftsmen and workers that he brought in to work on our home.

Beyond his creative brilliance and out-of-the-box dynamic problem-solving skills, these are the salient qualities Chris possesses that made this project and working with Black Cat Design Build, LLC a successful undertaking:
Honest: In both his communication style and financially. I could have handed him my checkbook and not be concerned about any mishandling of funds. Accepts responsibility for mistakes. Never beats around the bush.
Commitment: Hires the best people available for your project. Works to ensure everything is done correctly. He will be your best advocate.
Timeliness: Returns your text and phone calls almost immediately.
Respect and thoughtfulness: Leaves work area clean. Always makes the time to address clients' concerns. Let's you know when he will not be available.
Sense of Humor: Remodeling is a long process. There will be challenges and obstacles along the way. Having a sense of humor can go a long way.

We are so impressed & happy with the adu apartment complete with a full kitchen, bath, bedroom, living area, laundry, private and shared entrances  Chris created for my Mother. All of our neighbors, friends, and family cannot believe how seamless the integration between our home and her 612 ft apartment.  He did a wonderful job communicating with us throughout the entire process. He listened to our ideas and brought them beautifully to life.
In addition Chris worked with us re siding our home, replacing windows, repairing damage, painting the entire structure, and having an additional driveway poured.  All of the people he brought onto the job were professional and skilled.

The short version of our review is that we were very happy to have chosen Chris for our renovation project and would hire him again. In fact, we most likely will for another project.
Chris offers being a designer, and a very good one, and a contractor, which makes the coordination of any project that much easier.
We had a time difficulty articulating what we were looking for and Chris has a very good ability to figure it out, and offer you alternatives: carpets, paint color, tiles, etc...
While no project ever gets to be executed exactly as planned, and this one was no exception, Chris is very good at keeping things on track and offering good alternatives.

Back in August we had 3 renovation contractors come to our house. Chris Miller was one. Immediately we were impressed. He  had details of the house history, did his research and came prepared. He gave us the best estimate and his personality was organized and competent. The scheduling was very close to his time estimate.
