Addition With Seamless Integration – 2016

Wide-angle view of a luxury multi-story home featuring structural additions, a covered entry porch, balcony, and manicured front lawn.

When we design an addition, the goal is always continuity. This project added more than 1,000 square feet to the home across two separate areas, yet the expansion is intentionally hard to detect. The new construction was carefully integrated with the existing structure so that the home reads as one cohesive whole rather than old and new stitched together.

A major component of the addition is a large, covered outdoor living space designed to function as a true extension of the home. The structure features a vaulted wood ceiling with exposed beams and skylights, bringing in natural light while maintaining shelter and comfort. Anchored by a masonry fireplace and flanked by built-in grilling and prep areas, the space supports year-round use for entertaining, relaxing, and everyday living.

Material choices, rooflines, proportions, and structural details were all selected to align closely with the original house. The result is an addition that feels balanced and intentional, enhancing both interior and exterior living without disrupting the home’s architectural identity.

Key Areas Transformed:

A close up of the molding detail. We spent a lot of time matching the details from the existing areas. Our carpenter even hand made the fluted columns when we couldn’t find a ready-made molding with the right spacing to match the rest of the house.

We mixed some contemporary details – the fireplace and the cut marble tile – in with the traditional elements in this Living Room. The results? More personality, more interest and a slimmer fireplace that doesn’t take up as much space as the old one.

A view of the newly expanded Family Room. We removed a wall, added about 4′ to the room, added the bar counter, and matched the existing finishes so that it’s very hard to see what was changed.
